Description
The One to Ten in Daoism is a practice that emphasizes relaxation, grounding, and cultivating inner stillness. Below is an overview of its principles and practice:
Principles of One to Ten Meditation
- Relaxation and Rooting: This meditation creates a sacred healing space by relaxing the body and rooting the mind deeply into the present
- Integration of Breath and Energy: Breathing is central to Daoist meditation, where slow, deep breaths guide internal energy (Qi) through the body, promoting healing and balance
- Counting breaths or movements from one to ten helps concentrate the mind and quiet distractions. Once reaching ten, practitioners can start over again, cultivating mindfulness and presence if they wish or continue with other practices
How to Practice
- Posture: Stand upright or sit comfortably in a cross-legged position or on a chair with feet flat on the ground (can also be done in a lying posture)
- Breathing: Breathe slowly and deeply through the nose, expanding the abdomen, exhaling through the mouth, contracting the abdomen
Counting for Focus (in a rhyming fashion to help with focus and memorization):
- One is fun – bringing the energy down the front of the body, back of the body and centre of the body
- Two is shoe – imagine your feet melting and rooting deep into the core of the planet like a tree
- Three is tree – see tree roots rooting in all directions beneath your feet deep into the core of the planet
- Four is core – as the roots reach the core of the planet the energy of the core rises up through the dilated roots back up to meet your feet
- Five is alive – the energy rises up through your feet up the backside of the body, over your head, down the front and fills the lower abdomen
- Six is thick – the energy fills your entire body and then rushes out of the centre of your palms filling the entire room and gathers around your body
- Seven is heaven – looking up to the heavens and seeing yourself within the universe you connect with the centre of the universe
- Eight is gate – reaching the centre of the universe, opening your crown, allow the divine light to fill your 3 dantians (mind, heart, abdomen)
- Nine is shine – connect the 3 dantians together and see yourself connected between heaven on earth on the taiji pole in the centre of the body
- Ten is begin – you can now choose to continue this meditation or move into other practices
